Oh man, right now I am going through 5e for my Heartbreaker trying to understand the intent of various rules to shrink them down and make them easier and quicker to understand. This point is really relevant to the whole process and once again I appreciate your insights!

That's an interesting article. I agree that games can be improved by taking things out, especially mechanics that don't carry their own weight. That's why I've complained about bloated mechanics in my recent review of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.

Similar to you, I don't think time tracking is fun. Buff management in RPGs is another total drag as it doesn't add anything meaningful to the game. Instead, it's just a chore. I think, we do well to remember that "Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
